Spectres (2011), the award-winning film by Belgian artist Sven Augustijnen, deals with one of the darkest pages of Belgian colonial history in the Congo – the events leading up to and around the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. The film reveals unresolved conflicts and tensions still operating today, questioning the borders between fiction and the unfolding of real historical events in the face of powerful political discourse.

Augustijnen’s exhibitions and screening events include venues such as: Tate Modern, Witte de With, Kunsthalle Basel, St. Louis Contemporary Art Museum, Museo Reina Sofia, Documenta 12, Wiels and the 2013 Lubumbashi Biennale. Spectres has garnered wide acclaim and was awarded the 2011 Evens Art Prize at the Pompidou Centre (Paris).
